The built city holds today many post-war infrastructure that has few to no advocates. Conceived as purely functional, these buildings have at fi rst sight no special features. Aged, a majority of them face now demolition in order to be replaced by new buildings.
Let's change perspective.
Many of these buildings hold a strong potential waiting to be rediscovered. The design studio in the winter term 2022/23 was about studying the Lysbüchel parking garage on the transformation site "Volta Nord" in Basel. Previously used for commercial purposes, an extension of the existing St. Johann residential
quarter is planned to be developed in the site. A public square as well as a residential building are supposed to be built in the area currently occupied by the parking garage. Other residential buildings are planned in the immediate vicinity.
Instead of seeing the existing building as a disruptive factor to be removed for the future development of the area, we see it as an opportunity. The Lysbüchel parking garage consists of a prefabricated structure of precast reinforced concrete elements along with ribbed slabs. In the course, we explored the architectural potential these elements could bring.
We investigated the conversion of segments of the parking garage into residential use. Can a partial deconstruction take place? Or can individual elements be deconstructed, reused and formed into a new structure?
