  • 1962 - 1968 studied art history, archaeology and philosophy in Bonn and Freiburg, practical training in Roman and medieval archaeology
  • 1968 doctorate at the University of Bonn
  • 1968 - 1974 Scientific assistant at the Institute for Art History at the University of Karlsruhe
  • 1974 Habilitation at the University of Karlsruhe, university lecturer
  • since 1980 professor for art history
  • on 24 September 1999 Wolfgang Hartmann died in Karlsruhe

Main research interests in the art of the 18th - 20th century: among others aesthetics and art around 1800, historicism in the 19th century, new objectivity and realism of the 1920s, architecture of the 20th century, painting and sculpture, object art and new media of the present. In addition to teaching and research, he is committed to artists and art education through the organization, staging and catalogue editing of exhibitions in all areas of contemporary art, in cooperation with museums, art associations, academies and galleries.

Wolfgang Hartmann Prize


In 2001 a prize was created in memory of Wolfgang Hartmann's work. Every two years young art historians can apply for this prize with an exhibition concept on contemporary art.
