1ST FLOOR

Department of Building Science

Foyer
Exhibition of the bachelor theses "Townhouse in Karlsruhe

The examination of the classic type of "town house" took place on the one hand in the historical context of Karlsruhe and on the other hand in full awareness of how diffuse the term is from today's point of view, which first of all makes one think of hybrid uses (shops, offices, practices, apartments), at best of a high standard of living and a central city location. This conceptual openness is contrasted with the idea of the city.

Department of Urban Neighbourhood Planning

Research live - urban emotions
The department is currently working on the research project "urban emotions" under the direction of Dr. Peter Zeile. This is accompanied by a seminar dealing with urban perception in the broadest sense.
In the context of the exhibition, you are cordially invited to participate in the project as a test person. Equipped with an Ego-Cam and sensors, you will complete a course during which we will record your measurable sensations. Afterwards, these will be evaluated and made available. Additionally we will inform you about the project. Be curious to see what your 'emotions' look like!

Department of Regional Planning and Building in Rural Areas
On our book table you will find the just published book "LivingLab": Results of a 10-day expert workshop in Seoul in March 2016 with German and Korean scientists.
A presentation will take you to the Travelling Conference to Seoul in March 2017 with transport planners from the HSKA. Eight of our students participated and then worked on an impromptu in a small-scale existing neighbourhood.
At 8.15pm students will present their designs for a new development on a Krautacker on the outskirts of Berlin Pankow. They are experimenting with new forms of suburban living. What density / what mix fits here?

Hertta-Liisa Immonen and Irina Valta

Room 103 (Studio Wappner)

Wasted - Producing for the garbage
The annual exhibition usually presents final products of works. For us students, the path to these final products often means spending nights producing in the studio. The exhibition "Wasted" is meant to show the everyday life in the studios and to give a place to those things that, although they might end up in the garbage, are still relevant for the designs.

Sustainable Building

Room 141.1 ( Materials Library)

Building materials of the future
The 21st century is confronted with a radical paradigm shift in terms of how we design our living space in the future. While industrialization led to a shift from renewable to finite materials, our century will experience the opposite. We have two alternatives: to keep our already mined resources in a circular economy and to use mainly biological, renewable materials. To coincide with the annual exhibition, the Sustainable Building Department is presenting a materials exhibition on this topic in the Materials Library.

Study workshops

Room 136

The study workshops wood, model, metal, photography and digital present exemplary projects.

arch.lab

room 110.1

Fields of research. How and why research in architecture and urban planning.
Are TRIALS useful for designing? What is a FOCUS GROUP? How do I orient myself in an ARCHIVE? What distinguishes KEY QUESTIONS from EVENTUAL QUESTIONS? What CARTIFICATION METHODS can be used to study neighborhoods? Does the RESEARCH CIRCLE help narrow down a topic? How can you RESEARCH INDEPENDENTLY?
Excerpts from four arch.lab seminars show how differently research-oriented teaching in architecture can look and what questions it raises.

Building Lifecycle Management (BLM)

Room 117

DIGITAL Fabrication
Three teaching topics are presented as examples:
3D printing
Impromptu results created at the BLM lab that explore the possibilities of 3D printing technologies.
Building Information Modeling (BIM)
Insights into BIM based on student design projects, including the visualization possibilities of real-time renderings.
Shaping, folding and designing
A recurring design task is to create 3D objects from 2D elements, for example by folding or pinning. In the Stegreif KörperSkulptur (BodySculpture), a large-scale form is changed by body movement.

Department of Load-bearing Structures and Department of Master's in the Restoration of Old Buildings

Rooms 127-130

In room 130 you can gain an insight into the teaching and research activities of the Department of Structural Engineering.

Postgraduate Master's programme in the restoration of old buildings (MAi)
A future of our past?
On the occasion of its 20th anniversary at the department, the MAi provides an overview of the many thematic excursions and of the student research projects and master's theses that have been produced, which have dealt with the future of our past, with new concepts and with the further construction of existing buildings.
Unpopular Modernism?
The topic of Brutalism has been occupying us for the past 5 years. Ongoing research on this topic will be presented.

Architectural Communication

Room 257/259

A Tale of Two Cities: Ljubljana/Graz
Impressions of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and Graz, the capital of Austria's largest province, Styria, will be presented. The aim of the excursion and the accompanying seminar was to investigate the connection between architecture, urban development and communication using the example of these two small Central European metropolises. Stories were researched on site that tell of the many ways in which communication processes influence built reality and its perception.

Architectural Theory

room 258

bar talk
Architecture is one of the most valuable and fascinating cultural forms of thought and knowledge in our society. The field of architectural theory investigates the political, social, technical, aesthetic and economic influences on the built environment. With a view to the challenges of architectural practice at the beginning of the 21st century, it is concerned with the elaboration of historical and theoretical mappings of our present. So what does it mean for aspiring architects to design a globalized world that seeks its balance between digital transformation, migration and an increasing ecological awareness of resources?

The Department of Architectural Theory invites you to join us for discussion and drinks.
