Symposium on 'BAU2023 - World’s Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials, Systems' in Munich

In this event, we would like to stimulate a discourse on the current problems in the use of concrete, the current and future possibilities of recycling old concrete into new concrete, as well as new application concepts and production formulations for concrete.

The KIT Department of Architecture will be holding a symposium as part of this year’s “BAU2023 – World’s Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials, Systems”, which will take place in Munich from 17 to 22 April. The event will take place on 21 April from 12.00 to 13.30 in Hall B0, a hall with the motto “Investing in the Future”.
In this event, a discourse on the current problems in the use of concrete will be stimulated, the current and future possibilities of recycling old concrete into new concrete will be discussed as well as new application concepts and production formulations for concrete. It will be held in English.
Prof. Karen Scrivener, Head of EPFL Laboratory of Construction Materials, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Dehn, Head of KIT Institute of Concrete Structures and Building Materials and Koos Schenk, founder and director of SmartCrusher BV, are invited as speakers. Prof. Dirk E. Hebel will welcome the audience and introduce the speakers. The panel discussion after the lectures will be moderated by Dr. Thomas Welter, BDA federal manager.

Prof. Karen Scrivener, EPFL Laboratory of Construction Materials, Head of Laboratory 

Karen Scrivener has been Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Construction Materials in the Department of Materials of EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) for the last 20 years. She is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering and author of over 200 journal papers. She received her bachelor’s degree in Materials Science from the University of Cambridge in 1979 and her PhD from Imperial College London in 1984. Her research focuses on understanding the chemistry and microstructure of cement based materials and improving their sustainability.

NEW CEMENTITIOUS MATERIALS – RESEARCH VS. STANDARDISATION
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Dehn, KIT Institute of Concrete Structures and Building Materials, Head of Institute 

Frank Dehn is Professor and Head of Building Materials and Concrete Construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. He is a member of numerous national and international technical-scientific organizations (e.g. DAfStb, fib) as well as standardization (DIN, CEN) and expert committees (DIBt). As part of his research, he deals with new, alternative binders and concretes, their chemical-physical and mechanical properties and the provision of the associated constitutive material laws.

CIRCULAR RESOURCE ECONOMICS – HOW TO CLOSE THE LOOP OF EXISTING STRUCTURES
Koos Schenk, SmartCrusher BV, Director 

Koos Schenk studied chemical engineering as an employee in the Dutch refinery Shell Pernis. From 1983 to 1990, he worked as a technical advisor at the ENCI-Maastricht cement factory, which later became part of Heidelberg Cement. From 1990 to 2008, he was founder, designer and owner of Terrazzo Art Fidelity, manufacturing company of high-end concrete loudspeakers. In 2007, SCC BV was founded to provide concrete-related research and consultancy services to third parties. In this capacity, he was hired by BASF and TU Delft as interim manager and filed several international patents during this time. In 2014, SmartCrusher BV was founded for the European market on his initiative.
