Prix Universitaire franco-allemand Grand Est 2024

Awards for Léana Beyreuther, Carla-Marie Alvarez and Coraline Naturel, students of the Franco-German double master's degree in "Building in an International Context".

Three students from the Franco-German double master's degree in "Building in an International Context" received awards at the Grand Est 2024 Franco-German University Prize ceremony, which took place on January 26 at the University of Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse.

Léana Beyreuther, Carla-Marie Alvarez and Coraline Naturel were awarded 1st prize for their joint final project: "The railroad network as a means of strengthening the cross-border area". The project deals with the reactivation of the railroad line from Saarbrücken via Haguenau and Rastatt to Karlsruhe and the way in which this can reshape the cross-border area. The award winners developed a network consisting of new stops in the communities along the route and refurbished existing stations. The aim of the project is to enhance territorial resources and local expertise in this region, which is characterized by a Franco-German culture.
The work was supervised at KIT by Henri Bava and Dr. Riklef Rambow and in Strasbourg by Volker Ziegler and Mireille Diestchy.

Léana Beyreuther also received the 2nd prize for Master's theses in the humanities and social sciences. In her study, she compares architectural education in Strasbourg and Stuttgart after the First World War. What is special about this study is that Léana Beyreuther uses drawings by students and teachers as the main source for comparing the pedagogical methods.
The prize was presented by Michel Deneken, President of the University of Strasbourg.

Congratulations!

Lukas Großmann erhält die Daniel Gössler Belobigung 2023 des BDA Berlin

BDA BErlinBDA Berlin

Presentation of the Sparkassen Environment Award 2019 and 2020

After a break due to the pandemic, the last two years of the Sparkassen Environment Award could be honored in presence on July 26, 2021.

For 2019, Ms. Jannika Schäfer and Mr. Maximilian von Moltke were awarded for their master's theses and Dr.-Ing. Klarissa Niedermeier, Dr. Tobias Wirsing and Dr. Wei Huang for their dissertations. For 2020, Ms. Laura Spitzmüller received the Sparkassen Environment Prize for her master's thesis and Dr. Philip Brown for his dissertation. The prize has been awarded since 1979 by the Environmental Foundation of the Sparkasse Karlsruhe to promote outstanding scientific work at KIT, which in particular serves to solve environmental protection problems.

Master's graduate Max von Moltke received the award for his thesis "Minus 90 - an architectural approach to reduce plastic emissions".

About the thesis:
Every year, about 8 million tons of waste enter our oceans. A large part of this waste consists of plastic and is transported there via rivers. It is estimated to be nearly 2.5 million tons per year, 90% of which goes to just 10 rivers. It is high time that we develop ideas to counter this existential threat to our most important habitat.

Minus 90 is one such idea: to create a facility that aims to divert and collect the plastic waste carried by the Mekong River, recycle the collected waste, and educate the public on responsible plastic use and disposal.

A wing in the river, positioned vertically in the right place, allows the flow to be diverted and the plastic waste it carries to be directed to the circular recycling facility on the river bank. There it is recycled and used for new construction materials. The facility is deliberately designed as a circular building, and the circle has multiple symbolic meanings. The circle is considered an expression of completeness, of the whole. Circular shapes usually trigger positive associations and feelings. Minus 90, with its form and function, aims to contribute to the preservation of the earth, thus preserving the circle in its perfection. Recycling, as the name suggests, is a cycle, a circle. Thus, the function of the building is reflected in its form.

The work was supervised by the professorships of Sustainable Construction and Architectural Commuication.

Lukas Gerling wins the Sparkassen Environment Prize 2019

Lukas Gerling wins the 2019 Sparkasse Environmental Prize with his master's thesis "Future Fessenheim", developed under the supervision of the Professors of Sustainable Construction Dirk E. Hebel and Landscape Design Prof. Henri Bava. His work on the future of the nuclear power plant in Fessenheim was judged by the jury to be an extremely important and socially relevant topic in the international border area between France and Germany. With his critical-theoretical approach, he developed a design that combines different interpretations, memory and anxiety, architectural elements from the present and the past, international actors and new local actions. Lukas Gerling transformed the actual nuclear power plant into an expressive "pioneer building" as a public space with offers for cultural exchange, cultural creation and meeting places. Lukas Gerling transforms the former reactor building into a space of silence and introversion, showing his flair for space and architecture in exchange with psychology and social responsibility. In doing so, the unique space in the reactor buildings - which are intended as a memorial to nuclear energy - is preserved in its form.
His work was carried out as part of the dual master's program between ENSAS Strasbourg and the KIT Department of Architecture in Karlsruhe.

Schelling Study Award 2019

The best graduation projects of 2018 and 2019

From left to right: Friederike Reis, Rio Weber, Ellen Rémy, Daniel Uhrig, Julia Schäfer, Johanna Wisniewska, Peter Cachola Schmal, Christine Kohlmann, Dr. Ursula Baus, Marie Valet, Dean Prof. Dirk Hebel, Damian Platten and Prof. Ludwig Wappner.

On November 20, 2019, the Schelling Study Prize of the Schelling Architecture Foundation was awarded for the third time at the KIT Department of Architecture. This prize has been awarded every two years since 2015 to the best final theses of students of the department. A total of eight master's theses were nominated. The Schelling Study Prize is the student counterpart to the renowned Schelling Architecture Prizes for Architectural Theory and Architecture, with which the Foundation has been honoring pioneering developments in architecture as well as incisive achievements in architectural theory since 1992.

The jury always includes the prizewinners of the previous year. This time, they were the members of the Belgian architecture firm "Rotor" Marten Gielen and Tristan Boniver (Schelling Architecture Prize winners 2018), the KIT graduates Lisa Kahl and Damian Platten (winners of the Schelling Study Prize 2017) as well as Prof. Dr. Wilfried Wang (Schelling Architecture Foundation) and Dr. Ursula Baus (Schelling Architecture Foundation).
Prof. Ludwig Wappner hosted the evening. The laudations were read by Dr. Ursula Bau and Peter Cachola Schmal (Director of the DAM, Frankfurt/M.). The certificates were presented by Jutta Dambach-Stierle from the board of the Schelling Foundation.

The main prize of 2,000 euros was awarded to graduate Ellen Rémy. Her design "Society is the Actor" envisages the construction of a cultural centre at a run-down inner-city traffic junction in Stockholm. Drawing on the concept of liminality, which refers to the state in which people have transgressive experiences, her master's thesis explores the particular urban situation of this site. With her design of a hybrid structure consisting of a theatre, a cultural institution and a traffic infrastructure, she creates differentiated paths and interfaces that enable the targeted and accidental encounter of passers-by and visitors to the cultural centre. The result is a place of communication that blurs boundaries and can thus contribute to the creation of a new cultural identity.
The work was supervised by Prof. Renzo Vallebuona and Prof. Dr. Georg Vrachliotis.

In addition, two recognitions were awarded. One went to Christine Kohlmann for her design "Einblick Ausblick Warenhaus" (Insight into the Department Store) (Prof. Ludwig Wappner and Prof. Markus Neppl). Based on a classic department store in Stuttgart's city centre, the realistic design shows how cleverly and farsightedly such a property could be maintained in the future with hybrid uses such as living, retail and working.

Another award went to Daniel Uhrig for his work "From Olympic Legacy to National Park / A Hotel near Sarajevo". In it, he deals with the restoration and conversion of a hotel complex near the Bosnian city of Sarajevo that was badly damaged during the war.

Also nominated were the projects:

Reconstruction X: Vision of a conscious urban repair, Reallabor Pforzheim
by Marie Valet
Supervised by Prof. Ludwig Wappner and Prof. Dr. Georg Vrachliotis.

Material price 2019 - MehrWERT Pavilion

The Mehr.Wert.Pavillon at the BUGA by the Sustainable Building Department KIT Karlsruhe, 2hs Architekten und Ingenieur PartGmbB has won the Material Award 2019.
Materialpreis2019

The Mehr.Wert.Pavillon at the Federal Horticultural Show 2019 in Heilbronn demonstrates the innovative and sensible use of reused and recycled resources: All materials used in the project have already gone through at least one life cycle and are again completely separable after the pavilion is dismantled. The pavilion demonstrates various material cycles for the structure, façade, floor and interior: The supporting structure is made entirely of steel, most of which comes from a dismantled coal-fired power plant in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The facade is made of recycled glass that has been processed into two different building materials - e.g. Magna glass ceramics made from broken and bottled glass. The floor in the garden and under the pavilion combines different mineral demolition materials and the furniture and fixtures are made of various plastic materials. The countertop, for example, is made from recycled kitchen cutting boards.

University Award Wood Construction 2019

Recognition for Sonja Steenhoff

The winners of the 2019 University Award for Wood Construction were announced at LIGNA in Hanover on May 28, 2019. The jury, chaired by Prof. Tom Kaden, had to evaluate a total of 62 entries from 32 chairs at German universities.

KIT student Sonja Steenhoff received a recognition award for her design "Tabaktheater". The project is characterized by a respectful handling of an existing wooden structure as well as by the convincing integration of contemporary functionalities. Above all, the jury was convinced by the upgrading of the historic structure through a convincing utilization strategy; in addition, it scored points with atmospheric visualizations. The design is the result of a Master's study project carried out under the Professorship of Sustainable Building Dirk E. Hebel at the KIT Department of Architecture.

Hermann Billing Prize 2019

On the occasion of the awarding of the Hermann Billing Prize 2019 for outstanding dissertations, a public ceremony with musical accompaniment took place on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. in the Egon-Eiermann Lecture Hall of the Department of Architecture at KIT. The prize donated by the "CFC Hermann-Billing-Preis e.V." was awarded to:

Dr. phil. Anna Krüger
for her dissertation: Alexander Camaro (1901-1992). Life and Work.

Artists also had a special social task in the post-war period: the manageable number of artists living in Germany after 1945 were involved in the ideological and political re-education of the people. This monographic study focuses on one of them: the draughtsman, painter and scenic designer Alexander Camaro (1901 Breslau - 1992 Berlin). Today almost forgotten, he is one of the most important representatives of this period. The source study therefore provides a fundamental art-historical classification. An extensive catalogue raisonné of the paintings, with over 1000 entries, also documents paintings that have been lost or thought to be lost. Access to the artistic estate made it possible to present personal problems and values on the basis of primary sources, as well as to provide insights into the creative process - from finding the picture to coloring and titling. In addition, the reception of the artist and his work is critically evaluated, taking into account contemporary historical statements - also against the background of the special situation of the post-war years.

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Martin Papenbrock
Co-referent: Prof. Dr. Oliver Jehle

Mrs. Dr.-Ing. Janna Hohn
for her dissertation: Urban backsides - The connective tissue of the city.

Cities are in a constant process of transformation. After filling up the large urban brownfields, the existing urban structure is now being redensified. Often this redensification hits places with a low structural density and quality, but with great functionality for the urban organism. These are the last inner-city places where noisy and dirty activities, low-cost services in close connection with neighbourhoods and creative business start-ups can take place. These functional places of work are diminishing at a rapid pace as they cannot withstand the pressure from higher value uses.
In order to better examine these places and their uses, the concept of "urban backsides" was introduced. By examining case studies in London, Hamburg and Berlin, it became clear that in order to control the displacement process of low-cost workspace from the inner city, conventional planning instruments are often insufficient and need to be supplemented by alternative, user-driven strategies.

Speaker: Professor Markus Neppl
Co-speaker: Professor Hilde Barz-Malfatti (Bauhaus University Weimar)

The award winners will present their theses in short lectures following greetings from Dean Prof. Dr. Georg Vrachliotis and Building Mayor Daniel Fluhrer. The introduction of the prize winners was done by Dipl.-Ing. Arne Petersohn, chairman of the sponsoring association. The presentations were followed by a discussion between the dean and the prize winners.

The award ceremony took place during the event "Research at the Faculty of Architecture".

Besser. Anders. Weniger! - Preis Volkswohnung

Im Wintersemester 2018/19 hat die Professur Nachhaltiges Bauen zusammen mit der Volkswohnung Karlsruhe einen Entwurf namens "Besser. Anders.

Urban Mining Student Award

Prof. Almut Grüntuch-Ernst, Berlin (Vors.)
Barbara Ettinger-Brinckmann, Präsidentin der Bundesarchitektenkammer
Christine Neuhoff vom Bundesministerium des Innern, für Bau und Heimat
Prof. José Mario Gutierrez, Bauhaus Uni Weimar
Mathaeus Nierzwicki, TU Braunschweig (in Vertretung von Prof. Volker Staab)

Baunetz CampusMasters - Tales from Trash to Treasure

Florian Bengert erhält für seine Masterarbeit „Tales from Trash to Treasure" den Architektenpreis der Baunetz CampusMasters Mai/Juni 2018.
bild001-1022c78e5bcd6ab6

Jahrhunderts auszuklinken.

Der von den Bachelorabsolventen Emil Haffner, Pan Hu, Julius Grün und Chris Soltysiak eingereichte Entwurf „La Base“ belegte im Wettbewerb den dritten Platz.

Ihren Beitrag beschreiben sie wie folgt: „A place in the city, disconnected from the city, connected to its history, disconnected from its beliefs.
The chapel of San Filippo Neri is a space with potential. Getting rid of all religious symbols, the chapel is emptied, as it has been done in the past. New materials and openings emphasize its spatial qualities. Outside the decoration and ornament is kept. Therefore the access is relocated, changing the perception of the space in relation to its representation and structure.
A perimeter wall is added to the remaining wall to de fine the urban surrounding, restoring Via Giulia on one side and completing the piazzetta on the other side. The wall contains a building with all necessary functions as well as it forms an intimate patio, which serves as an atrium. The entrances to the patio are in an aligned sequence to the new park, giving it a public relation despite its introverted character.“
