  • born 30 September 1949 in Heerlen ,is a Dutch architect, urban planner and university lecturer.
  • Before becoming self-employed, he worked briefly in the architectural practice of Aldo van Eyck & Theo Bosch in Amsterdam after graduating in 1979. In 1979 he opened his own architectural practice in Eindhoven. Initially he handled a few smaller commissions, but by then he was already planning the library in Heerlen (1983-86) and the city hall in Delft (1984-86).
  • In 1988 he won the competition for the Dutch Institute of Architecture in Rotterdam, which marked his professional breakthrough (completed in 1993). In 1997 he participated in the Milan Triennale and the Sao Paulo Biennale.
  • In 1987 he was in charge of urban planning in The Hague, Amsterdam, Maastricht, Eindhoven and Tilburg. As an urban planner he was responsible, for example, for the KNSM island in the eastern harbour area in Amsterdam (1988-89) and for the Vaillantlaan in The Hague and the former Sphinx Céramique site in Maastricht (1987).
  • In 2000-2004 he was the Reichsbaumeister of the Netherlands.
  • In 1995 he won the BNA Cube, an award of the Association of Dutch Architects (BNA). He is an honorary member of the Association of German Architects.
  • He was and is active as a university lecturer in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. In 1976, the year after his graduation, he became a lecturer at the Technical University of Eindhoven, and two years later at the Academy of Architecture in Maastricht.
  • In 1995 he received a professorship at the RWTH Aachen.
  • Since 2001 he has been a professor at Delft University of Technology.
