  • 1969 - 1975 Studied sociology, history, political science and psychology at the University of Bielefeld and at the Free University of Berlin.
  • 1975-1976 Lectureship at the Free University of Berlin
  • 1978-1983 Assistant lecturer in the sociology of architecture, political sociology and urban sociology at the Technical University of Berlin and lecturer in general sociology at the Free University of Berlin. Guest critic at the Architectural Association in London and at the Bauhauskolleg Dessau.
  • Lectureship in urban and architectural sociology at the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Weimar (today: Bauhaus University) and in the Real Estate Management course at the TU Berlin.
  • Various guest professorships in architectural history, architectural sociology and architectural theory at the University of California Berkeley, Berlin University of the Arts, TU Braunschweig, Alcatel/SEL guest professorship at the International Center for Cultural and Technological Research at the University of Stuttgart, among others.
  • 2008 Appointment to the Department of Architectural Theory in the Department of Architecture at the KIT Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
  • 2010 - 2011 Managing Director of the Institute of Design, Art and Theory.
  • Numerous memberships, among others of the curatorial team of the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2008, freelance work in architectural and planning offices, freelance author, curator, extraordinary member of the Association of German Architects (BDA) Berlin, member of the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning (DAS).Member of the scientific advisory board of the series "Bauwelt Fundamente" (Birkhäuser Verlag, Basel, Berlin, Boston), Member of the section Urban and Spatial Sociology of the German Sociological Association, Permanent contributor to the journal Arch+, Chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Building Culture (Förderverein Baukultur) at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie.
  • Chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Building Culture at the Federal Government, Scientific Advisory Board of the IBA Fürst - Pückler - Land, Advisory Board of the Yearbook Architecture in Hamburg, Hamburg Chamber of Architects.
  • Erich Schelling Prize for Architectural Theory, University of Karlsruhe, 2006 and since 2011 member of the advisory board of the Schelling Architecture Foundation Karlsruhe.
