Back at the department: Dr. Linda Báez Rubí

Dr. Linda Báez Rubí will be a Visiting Professor of Art History in the Department of Art and Architectural History beginning in October 2023.

She is a Research Professor at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (IIE) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in the fields of Viceroyalty Art and Image Theory. She studied Hispanic Studies at the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, UNAM (1996), obtained a Master's degree in Combined Historical Studies (Renaissance) at the Warburg Institute in London (1997), a PhD in Modern History and Romance Philology at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg (2004), and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Research Training Group "Image-Body-Medium. An Anthropological Perspective" at the HfG Karlsruhe (2006-2008).

She teaches theory and methodology at the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras UNAM (since 2009) and was visiting professor at the IAS/Roman Studies Chair at Bielefeld University (2013). She is a member of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores, SNI (since 2011), Editor-in-Chief of the journal Anales del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (since 2012) and was Resident Fellow at the Warburg Institute, University of London, where she worked on the project Bilderfahrzeuge: Aby Warburg's Legacy and the Future of Iconology (2014-2018).

She is the editor and co-editor, translator, and author of six books and has published numerous articles and book chapters on visualization strategies, rhetoric, optics, and image theory in cultural exchange between Latin America and Europe (15th-18th centuries). Her publications include: Cómo generan sentido las imágenes de Gottfried Boehm (México: IIE-UNAM, 2017), El Atlas de imágenes Mnemosine de Aby Warburg, 2 vols. (Mexico: IIE-UNAM, 2012); Los estatutos de la imagen: creación-manifestación-percepción (México: IIE-UNAM: 2014); The itineraries of the image: practices, uses and functions (México: IIE-UNAM, 2010), Mnemosyne novohispánica. Retórica e imagen en el siglo XVI (México: IIE-UNAM, 2005), and The Reception of the Doctrine of Ramon Llull in the Rhetorica Christiana (Perugia, 1579) by the Franciscan Fray Diego de Valadés (Frankfurt a. Main: Peter Lang, 2004).

Her current research projects are "Visualization Strategies and Cultural Exchange between Europe and Asia across the Ibero-American Continent, Folding Screens of Conquest" and "Aby Warburg and Pre-Columbian Studies: Historiographical Reconstruction and Theoretical Development."
