  • 1959 - 1971 Participation in eight excavation campaigns in the Hittite capital Bogazköy-Hattusa under the direction of Kurt Bittel.

  • 1978 - 1988 Exploration of the Neolithic Cayönü-Tepesi in eastern Turkey together with Halet Cambel, Istanbul, and Robert Braidwood, Chicago.
  • Since 1985 Head of the sub-project "Research on building construction and building technology" in the Collaborative Research Centre 315 "Preservation of historically significant buildings".
  • Since 1990 New survey and building research of Castel del Monte.
  • Since 1992 research and excavation of the ruins of Göllüdag in Central Anatolia.


  • Since 1975 member of the Central Directorate of the German Archaeological Institute as representative of the architectural history institutes of all German universities. German editor of "architectura", journal for the history of architecture. Founder and director of the Southwest German Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering.
