Visiting professor Anupama Kundoo honoured

Anupama Kundoo was honoured with the Building Sense Now Global Award for her commitment to climate- and culture-friendly building. She currently holds a visiting professorship from the Sto Foundation at the KIT Department of Architecture.

The Building Sense Now Global Award was presented on 11 November 2021 at a digital award ceremony with the participation of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and in the context of the World Climate Conference COP26. The Building Sense Now Global Award seeks new, innovative design strategies from around the world that aim to achieve ambitious goals and address the issues of climate change and sustainability. The focus of this award is on the architects and their design process, as well as philosophical and ethical issues - not just the final solution in the built project.

This year, the prize went to the Indian architect Prof. Dr. Anupama Kundoo. She was honoured for her commitment to climate and culture-friendly building. With her offices in Pondicherry and Berlin, she has already realised more than 100 projects, most of them in India. She currently holds a professorship in structural engineering at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences and a visiting professorship from the Sto Foundation at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Her projects have a particular focus on social issues and take into account people and their need for a place of refuge in a meaningful way. In doing so, she makes targeted use of simple, natural materials, which she processes in a sensitive manner to create functional structures. For this exemplary type of architecture, which is culturally, climatically and socially compatible, she was awarded by the international planning initiative Building Sense Now.

Anupama Kundoo is one of four visiting professors who, financed by the Sto Foundation, will provide students and teachers at the KIT Department of Architecture with a comprehensive perspective on the topic of "Sustainable Materials for a new Architectural Practice - Entering a circular economy" over the next two years. The guest professorships will be dedicated to the question of how, in times of climate change and an increasingly glaring shortage of resources and pollution of our environment, we can deal responsibly with our natural resources in building by using materials in a sustainable manner. In addition to courses in the master's program in architecture, public lectures will be offered. Anupama Kundoo has already participated with a lecture in the current department lecture series "All Tomorrows Places".

More information about the endowed professorships will follow.
