The skyscraper as a fabric of design and technology

Buildings and Projects in West Germany between 1945 and 1980
Cover
Cover

The construction of high-rise buildings is often accompanied by emotional discussions: On the one hand, the building type is seen as a solution to the current challenges facing cities, on the other as an aesthetic impossibility or an expression of undesirable gentrification. Current designs reveal a typological exhaustion that stands in stark contrast to the structural richness of the high-rise buildings of earlier decades. On the basis of a catalogue of 100 projects, Falk Schneemann provides a critical overview of the development of high-rise buildings in West Germany between 1945 and 1980. With the help of technical-philosophical and technical-genetic approaches, he points out breaks and moments of innovation that contribute to a fundamental understanding of the building type and enable a better assessment of current developments.

«Louis Kahn: The Importance of a Drawing»

Michael Merrill Louis Kahn
Michael Merrill, Louis Kahn: The Importance of Drawing

Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974) was one of the most significant architects of the twentieth century and his influence is present today in ways both profound and subtle. Unlike previous publications on Kahn, which have focused on his built work and which considered the drawings foremost as illustrations of these, this is the first in-depth study of drawings as primary sources of insight into Kahn's architecture and creative imagination.
By offering a spectrum of close readings of drawings by Kahn and his associates in a series of incisive and richly illustrated essays, this book is at once an intimate artistic portrait of this important architect and a provocative and timely contribution to the current discourse on representation in architecture. For architects and students of architecture, Kahn's lasting significance is not only in the buildings he built, but in how he designed them.
Based on unprecedented archival research, engagingly presented by a group of eminent scholars and architects, and lavishly illustrated with over 900 highest quality reproductions, The Importance of a Drawing is destined to become a standard work in the literature on Louis Kahn.

Retracing Political Dimensions

Strategies in Contemporary New Media Art
Cover
Retracing Political Dimensions

At the beginning of the 21st century, new forms and dynamics of interplay are constituted at the interfaces of media, art and politics. Current challenges in society and ecology, like climate, surveillance, virtualization of the global financial markets, are characterized by hybrid and subtle technologies. They are ubiquitous, turn out to be increasingly complex and act invasively. New media art utilizes its broad range of expression in order to tackle the most urgent topics through multi-sensorial, participatory, and activist approaches. This volume shows how media artists address, with a political lens, the core of these developments critically and productively.

Statics and structural engineering for architects

Rosemarie Wagner
400 pages
Fraunhofer IRB Publishing House
ISBN 978-3-7388-0350-1
2020

When you design a building, you have to think about the supporting structure from the very beginning. This book provides the knowledge about forces and deformations, structures and load-bearing behavior that architects need for their designs. Methods for the pre-dimensioning of components made of reinforced concrete, masonry, wood, glass or membranes are clearly explained and the necessary prior knowledge of mathematics, physics and building materials is refreshed. Those who want to delve deeper into calculations will find additional information on engineering approaches to solutions. Rosemarie Wagner attaches great importance to a holistic approach to building tasks. Her theory of structures is intended to enable architects to develop structures for creative architectural ideas and new building tasks together with civil engineers and specialist planners. The book is characterized by a clear layout, a clear language, understandable explanations and numerous color illustrations. It is therefore recommended for architectural studies and exam preparation, as well as for reference in everyday professional life.
